Gasser, a painter, lecturer, teacher, illustrator and author, lived, studied and worked in New Jersey for most of his life, studying at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art and the Grand Central School of Art. This was followed by study at the Art Students League of New York in the classes of Robert Bracman. He later studied privately under John R. Grabach. Considered a mastercolor of watercolor and oil, his work consisted of, in his own words, "everyday subjects that are available to most of us-street scenes, back yards, trees, old houses, etc I looked for them in front of houses, in backyards, public parks, and elsewhere". He also painted numerous harbor and fishing village scenes. He is represented in over fifty museum collections;
among the awards he received were the Hallgarten Prize at the National Academy, the Zabriskie, Osborne, and Obrig prizes at the American Watercolor Society, the Philadelphia Watercolor Club prize, the Allied Artists Gold Medal at Oakland, California and many others. He was a member of the National academy of Design, the American Watercolor Society, the Royal Society of Art (Great Britain), the Salmagundi Club, the Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Watercolor Clubs and the New Jersey Watercolor Society, as well as a life member of the National Arts Club, Grand Central Art Galleries and the Art Students League and others.  Signed in plate l.r.c.Appel (Karel Appel, Dutch, 1921-2006). These intensely colorful expressionist lithographs made by the artist with the company L`Ouevre Gravee are considered the highlights of his graphic work and are much prized by collectors.

Karel Appel was born in Amsterdam. From 1940 to 1943 he studied there at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, and in 1946 his first solo show was held at Het Beerenhuis in Groningen, the Netherlands. That same year he participated in the Jonge Schilders exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam. Appel was influenced by artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Dubuffet, and these influences led him to help co-establish the COBRA movement in 1948. In 1950 the artist moved to Paris;
three years later he was given a solo show at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. He received the UNESCO Prize at the Venice Biennale of 1954, and was commissioned to execute a mural for the restaurant of the Stedelijk Museum in 1956. The following year Appel traveled to Mexico and the United States and won a graphics prize at the Ljubljana Biennial in Yugoslavia. He was awarded an International Prize for Painting at the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1959. Solo exhibitions of his work were held at the Centre National d`Art Contemporain in Paris and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1968, and at the Kunsthalle Basel and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1969. During the 1950s and 1960s he executed numerous murals for public buildings.  Pencil-signed on mat l.r.c. Sam Francis (American, 1923-1994).

Francis was an American painter and printmakerwho began his painting career after being hospitalized for injuries sustained in World War II. He began a formal study of art in Berkeley, where he was initially influenced by the works of abstract expressionists such as Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky and Clyfford Still. He spent the 1950s in Paris, having his first exhibition there in 1952. He later spent time in Japan, and some of the works from that era display the influence of Zen Buddhism.

Francis returned to California in the 1960s. During the final three decades of his career his style of large-scale bright Abstract Expressionism was also closely associated with Color Field painting. As in this work, his mature pieces are generally splashed or splattered areas of bright contrasting colour with areas of white left to show through.
